DIY Sofa Table

Today I'm sharing a fun DIY project the hubby and I built on Saturday.  I have to admit, I'm still a bit shocked I was able to coax him into building this with me.  Normally he runs like crazy if I ask him to build or work on something with me.  Let's just say he's very logical and well....I'm not.  He likes to use plans to build something, where I find it more fun to figure it out as I go along.

Now because I knew he wasn't going to be happy if we didn't have a plan to follow, I found a great plan for this project on Rogue Engineer's website.  I was lucky enough to meet Jamison, AKA Rogue Engineer, at the Haven conference in July.  The hubby is a big fan of his plans after he built two workbenches for our garage workshop from Rogue Engineer plans.  Once I told the hubby the plans were on Jamison's site, he was fine with moving forward with the project!  WOOHOO!

There were a few options for console tables and I found the one I wanted right away!  We decided to build the Book Rack Console Table.

Here's what we needed to build this project:

TOOLS:
-Pocket hole jig (I used my Kreg Jig)
-Drill
-Miter Saw
-Brad Nailer
-Tape Measure
-Pencil
-Safety Goggles
-Hearing Protection

MATERIALS:

 Three 2 X 2 X 8' Select Pine Boards
Three 1 X 8 X 8' Common Pine Boards
2 1/2" Pocket Hole Screws (coarse)
1 1/4" Pocket Hole Screws (coarse)
1 1/4" Brad Nails
2" Wood Screws

This wasn't hard to build at all.  The plans were easy to follow.  Honestly, the hardest part was remembering how to use my Kreg Jig and that's super easy!

When I was at the Haven conference I was lucky enough to win a Kreg Jig kit.  I took a workshop about how to use the jig and it was a game changer.  I can't wait to build my next project now!!

Here's what the table looked like after we were finished with the build.

I could have just left it as is and painted the whole table, but I wanted something a little more special.

I've been using a lot of reclaimed wood for projects lately and wanted the top of the table to look like reclaimed wood.  We needed a few tools to make that happen.

Hunter and I took these tools and started banging on the table top.  After about 10 minutes we were done with 'project give the table some character'!

I stained the top of the table with Minwax gel stain in Dark Walnut and Red Mahogany.  I also added a wash of Chalk Paint™ by Annie Sloan in Paris Grey to give the top some depth and age.

Here's how the top looked after I was done with stain.

For the rest of the table, I used Chalk Paint™ in Paris Grey as a base coat, then Pure White for the top coat.  I wanted the grey to show through where I distressed the table.

To finish the table, I used dark wax on the stained top and clear wax to seal the paint on the rest of the table.

Here's how it looks all done!

I think the hubby and I have found something we can do together.....that is as long as we have a plan to follow.  I'm sure we'll be using Rogue Engineer's plans again soon.  I have lots of ideas for what to make next.

Have you built your own furniture using free plans?  If so, what have you built?  How did it work for you?

Thank you for reading!!

  9. During a Nov. {tag: Off White Yeezy 350 V2 Black}Earlier this year I covered a "Wyoming party" in Miami inspired by his new album Ye that turned out to be a glorified merch pop up for T shirts that were still being made. A dinky sound system played West's music while fans waited in the pouring rain while the hosts assured us the merch was on the way.And yet, it's hard to imagine a solution for a problem that's so self sustaining. As long as fans are willing to pay any price for a piece of their idol, Scott and West can hawk their wares at any price, no matter how inconvenient, no matter how destructive it is for the average person. {tag: White Yeezys Stockx}
